LA JOLLA, CA — March 02, 2005 – Caucho® Technology, Inc. a Sun Microsystems J2EE licensee, along with AldraTech, announced today that Caucho’s Hessian binary protocol proves its flexibility in the C++ programming environment.
Caucho® Technology’s Hessian binary protocol makes web services useable without requiring a large framework, and without learning yet another alphabet soup of protocols. Because it is a binary protocol with a small footprint it is well suited to sending digital data such as .MP3 and image files in today’s mobile environment.
AldraTech is a long-established software house with a wealth of experience in projects ranging from embedded / thin client to enterprise systems. Their client list includes some of the biggest names in the European betting and online gaming industry. Generius, AldraTech’s multiplayer gaming platform, employs Hessian for unprecedented stateless scalability in its market segment.
Radu-Adrian Popescu, Chief Software Architect/Aldratech Ltd, said, “We were looking for an efficient, cross-platform and programming language agnostic RPC protocol. Previous experiences with XML-RPC and SOAP have not been satisfactory, ranging from processing overhead to the programming effort required to express complex objects using these protocols. Hessian immediately looked like a very good candidate: a self-describing protocol with a very compact binary representation. At the time the only languages supported were Java and Python, so I wrote a basic C++ client library, a code generator that pretty much uses the Java interface as an IDL for generating C++ client stubs and also added gzip compression support.”
Steve Montal, Director of Sales and Strategic Partnerships for Caucho® Technology, Inc. said, “AldraTech’s decision to create a C++ client library based on the Hessian protocol shows how flexible Hessian can be. Caucho’s support of the open source model means that we welcome innovative projects like the Hessian C++ and pending Flash/ActionScript implementation that AldraTech is working on.” Montal continued, “We fully support AldraTech and others as they explore new ways of integrating Hessian and Resin into their operations.”
Popescu added, “We’ve used Hessian successfully in a commercial project so far, and since then built and used internally a Flash/ActionScript 2.0 implementation that we’re considering open-sourcing as well.”
