LA JOLLA, CA — March 29, 2005 – Caucho® Technology, Inc., a Sun Microsystems J2EE licensee, announced today that Caucho’s Hessian binary protocol has been released for the PHP programming environment.

Caucho® Technology’s Hessian binary protocol makes web services useable without requiring a large framework, and without learning yet another repertoire of protocols. Because it is a binary protocol with a small footprint it is well suited to sending digital data such as .MP3 and image files in today’s mobile environment.

HessianPHP is an implementation of the Hessian binary web services protocol for both PHP 4 and 5 platforms. The project consists of a set of classes that enable developers to consume and publish Hessian web services.

Programmer Manolo Gomez Placencia, who wrote the HessianPHP library said, “Hessian PHP was initially conceived as a research project with two goals in mind: the implementation of a binary communication protocol in a dynamically typed language and the use of new PHP 5 features in a real project. Many integration solutions that I’ve tested including web services, traditional flat-file and database do not provide the combination of features, speed and ease of use that I wanted. Then, after studying the Hessian protocol spec and its implementations (Java, C++ and Python at that time) I decided to create a library that provides these features for my primary development platform, which is PHP. Developing a library based in the Hessian protocol proved to be easy and straightforward in both PHP 4 and 5.” Placencia continued, “My goal with HessianPHP is to promote the use of the Hessian protocol as an excellent alternative to traditional web services and the use of PHP as a serious enterprise development environment.”

Steve Montal, Director of Sales and Strategic Partnerships for Caucho® Technology, Inc. said, “The HessianPHP library is a great addition to Hessian.” Montal continued, “Mr. Placencia’s implementation will allow PHP developers to take advantage of the features and functionality of Hessian web services.”
