Japan's largest community gaming portal deploys on Resin

LA JOLLA, CA -- May 1, 2006 -- Caucho Technology, Inc., a leader in providing open source solutions to ensure high performance and reliability for large-scale Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) applications, today announced that Wazap!, one of the most visited sites in the Japanese gaming market, has deployed on Resin application server.

Wazap! was developed by Eastbeam Co., Ltd., the Tokyo based subsidiary of Eastbeam GmbH, based in Berlin. "Wazap!" is among the most visited sites in the Japanese gaming market and offers a vast amount of information of all console and online games released in Japan. "Wazap!" is the first choice for gamers who are looking for the latest game related news, information, reviews and walkthroughs.

Caucho Technology produces Resin, an industry leading open source high performance Java application server used by thousands of corporate, education and government clients. Resin’s simplicity of use allows organizations that have large and demanding sites to focus on delivering their message. Resin features include Quercus, an implementation of the PHP 5 language in Java that allows engineers to build a presentation layer using PHP and business logic using Java all within the application.

Manri Offermann, Chief of System Development for Eastbeam said, "Wazap! migrated from Apache Tomcat to Resin since Tomcat could not handle the load of our site anymore. At that time we chose Resin because internal testing had shown that not only the overall performance were excellent, but also small yet vital parts of Resin like database connection pooling, fast JSTL etc. boosted the throughput of the site." Offerman added, "With Resin adhering to Java standards, it supported multibyte languages like Japanese without a glitch which was not the case for a lot of other java products. The high performance of Resin helps really keeping the number of servers low."

Steve Montal, Director of Sales and Strategic Partnerships for Caucho Technology, Inc. said, "We have seen the online gaming market grow at a rapid pace using Java and PHP technology.” Montal added, “We look forward to a long term relationship where we can provide our technology to Eastbeam, a global leader in the gaming market."

Markus Ken Moriyama, Development Director of Eastbeam Co., said, "It is very important for us to actually know what we are purchasing. The open source model of Resin allows one to look at the code should it be necessary. The professional team behind Resin offers excellent support, actually listening to the customer's needs." Moriyama continued, "The cost-performance ratio is outstanding once you consider what kind of high quality J2EE product you get compared to other solutions. And this comes with high performance and stability. We strongly feel that Resin is not just a business product, but more of a piece of art built by an IT company taking pride in its work."

Over 5000 customers use Resin including CNet, Fastweb, Evite, the American Red Cross, the Toronto Stock Exchange and Salesforce.com. Resin consistently delivers fast and stable performance under heavy load situations. Additionally, Resin's integrated standalone web server has built a solid reputation as a reliable and easy to maintain web server solution.

Markus Ken Moriyama, Development Director of Eastbeam Co., added, "The easy installation and configuration of Resin and features like being able to use expression language or include statements in the configuration files, have helped us keeping the time spent for configuration and maintenance low." Moriyama observed, "The continued stability of Resin took away a lot of stress not only from the servers, but also from our developers. Now we are using Resin exclusively both in development and production, on Linux and Windows. In production, Resin is handling the high load in a clustered environment using clustered distributed sessions."

With numerous added features, increased speed and load balancing, Caucho Technology's Resin open source application server has earned an industry-wide reputation as a robust solution to the Java application challenges that web developers most often face. Caucho Technology has developed the protocols Burlap and Hessian to produce fast solutions for the rapidly expanding web services market. In December 2005, Caucho announced the addition of PHP to its list of supported features, where the PHP pages are compiled in the background to byte-code, and the resulting performance is four times that of Apache mod_php.
