Resin 3.1.3 adds JSF 2.0, Comet support and new reliability features LA JOLLA, CA -- October 7, 2007 -- Caucho Technology, Inc., a leading open source Java-PHP application server vendor, today announced the release of Resin version 3.1.3 which adds significant features including: Resin 3.1.3 continues Caucho's tradition of reliability through new features like application version support and Comet-style applications. Resin now detects new versions of an application and deploys them in a way that preserves old sessions. The new version of Resin also makes it more reliable to write Comet-style applications in which servers push data to clients. Streaming and chat applications are examples. Resin's new Comet API makes writing such applications more reliable by taking care of threading and other system-level tasks. Several features targeted at application developers are also included. Resin 3.1.3 introduces Caucho's JavaServer Faces (JSF) 2.0 implementation. JSF is part of the JavaEE 5 feature set and offers a new way to create user interfaces for web developers. Improvements to library loading code mean that Resin starts faster than before. Developers using Caucho's Hessian Web Service protocol also have new debugging tools to help them during development. Resin 3.1.3 includes improvements to JPA and PHP functionality. Amber, Caucho's implementation of JPA, has improved performance for loads and cached queries. Caucho's 100% Java reimplementation of PHP, Quercus, now supports PHP 6 unicode.semantics meaning improved compatibility with more applications. Scott Ferguson, President of Caucho Technology, said "Resin 3.1.3 is not only reliable on its own, but also makes our customers applications more reliable. One of the most exciting changes is application versioning." Ferguson added, "When enabled, simply by giving .war files version numbers, Resin will figure out which is the newest version and start all new sessions using that version. Users with old sessions won't be shut out -- their sessions will continue on the older version until they time out. This makes upgrading an application painless to both developers and users. Users will see the application as being much more reliable even during version change-over." "Comet applications are becoming very popular now," said Emil Ong, Software Engineer at Caucho Technology. "In a Comet application, the server pushes data to the client such as in streaming and chat, for example. Writing these applications from scratch is often error-prone and difficult. Resin 3.1.3 adds a new API for Comet which improves the reliability of this process by taking care of system tasks like threading," added Ong. "Developers also have a lot to look forward to in this release," said Ong. "JSF is a hot new development API for web developers to design their user interfaces. Resin now features its own built-in implementation." Ong continued, "Startup time has been improved by changing the .jar loading code, meaning developers can now restart Resin without having to wait. For users of the Hessian Web Services protocol, debugging is now easier than ever with our new debugging streams." Caucho Technology products include Quercus, a pioneering open source architecture for web applications and services where Java and PHP are tightly integrated with each other. PHP applications can choose to use Java libraries and technologies like JMS, EJB, SOA frameworks, Hibernate, and Spring all within one application server. PHP applications running on Quercus are faster, easier to develop, more capable, more secure, and more scalable than any other PHP solution. Hessian is Caucho Technology's fast, compact, and efficient web services and serialization protocol. Used for years in both production and development environments with implementations in several languages including Java, C#, Ruby, PHP, and Python, Hessian has proved itself to be a versatile and powerful alternative to other web services technologies including SOAP. Caucho Technology has earned a reputation for supporting its products by a team of engineers devoted to quality customer service and a rapid bug fix and feature request program. Caucho has over 7,300 customers whose mission critical applications rely on Resin application server. About Caucho Technology, Inc.
