Resin 3.2.0 introduces new performance, scalability, and administration features LA JOLLA, CA -- August 6, 2008 -- Caucho Technology, Inc., a leading open source Java-PHP application server vendor, today announced the release of Resin version 3.2 which features faster performance, better scalability, and an improved administration experience. Resin 3.2.0 features include:
Resin 3.2.0 offers a number of new features targeted at making Java web applications faster, easier to administrate and develop, and more reliable. First among these features, dynamic clustering allows administrators to add and remove servers from a cluster while maintaining the reliability and speed of distributed sessions. This feature helps deployers take advantage of cloud computing environments and/or dynamically provision servers between clusters. The added flexibility offered by dynamic clustering gives users the ability to respond to sudden load spikes, changing demands, and unforeseen outages. Along with dynamic clustering, Resin 3.2.0 adds the ability to deploy applications remotely. This feature can be used to simplify adding servers dynamically or updating applications in traditional clusters. To improve performance with massive numbers of keepalive clients and Comet applications, Resin now has better socket management which reduces the number of threads necessary on the server. Resin 3.2.0 also features an improved administration application that makes it simple to see the most important information first. Administrators can now monitor the status of servers more easily with new graphing capabilities. Caucho continues its tradition of groundbreaking new technologies in Resin 3.2.0. Brokered agent messaging (BAM) is introduced in this new version Resin. This architecture abstracts the tested XMPP model to allow for multiple protocols and a unified communication API. For the developers and administrators, this means that they have easy access to messaging, queuing, logging, mail, and even chat/instant messaging all in one coherent framework. Another developer-targeted feature in Resin 3.2.0 is an Ivy-based classloader. Developers can now specify Ivy and Maven repositories as the sources for their dependencies. The latest versions of libraries will be available to the application automatically. One of the first implementations of the JSF 2.0 draft standard will also be available in Resin 3.2.0. Caucho's JSF implementation makes the developer's job easier by featuring easy debugging tools. Quercus, Caucho's innovative 100% Java implementation of PHP, has also been updated for the latest releases of WordPress, MediaWiki, and Drupal, among other popular PHP applications. BAM support has also been added to Quercus, giving PHP developers the ability to write server applications beyond web pages. Scott Ferguson, President of Caucho Technology, said, "The new features in Resin 3.2.0 make massive scalability a cinch. Dynamic clustering gives enterprises the ability to add and remove servers as their needs change either through gradual expansion or as an immediate response to sudden events. They can scale horizontally onto their own machines or cloud computing facilities. The new remote deployment facilities make it easy to get applications on to new servers or to update old versions of applications." Ferguson added, "To scale vertically, we have improved the socket handling code allowing for a huge number of simultaneous connections. Whether you are using the new Comet facilities or simply need long keepalives, Resin scales to meet those needs. Both dynamic clustering and socket statistics, along with much more information, are available and now easier to read in the newest version of our administration application." "Caucho has long been on the forefront of new technologies and Resin 3.2.0 reaffirms that leadership position," said Emil Ong, Chief Evangelist of Caucho Technology. "The BAM architecture that we have developed started on the solid foundation of XMPP, but now goes beyond it." Ong added, "What this means for developers and administrators alike is an easy-to-use, unified framework that allows access to virtually every facility in the application server including mail, messaging, server-push, logging, and more. Resin is also the most developer-friendly application server around. With features like our new Ivy-based classloader, developers can be up-to-date on the latest libraries automatically. Even within the realm of Java EE standards, Caucho is making highly innovative contributions. We're one of the first implementers of the JSF 2.0 draft standard and on top of that, we're also offering some unique debugging tools for the JSF developer. And although Quercus is becoming a common solution for the enterprise and runs the latest versions of popular PHP applications, we continue to push the boundaries with PHP by making available for even more server tasks beyond HTTP via BAM." Quercus is Caucho's 100% Java implementation of the PHP language and libraries. Available for use with any application server, Quercus brings the vast code base of PHP applications and knowledge to the Java platform. Quercus is a high performance implementation of PHP that meets or exceeds the performance of the C PHP implementation with common PHP applications. Built upon a mixed interpreted/compiled implementation, long-running PHP scripts are compiled to Java bytecode for performance, while during development they are interpreted to avoid compilation overhead. Caucho Technology products include Hessian, a fast, compact, and efficient web services and serialization protocol and Quercus, a 100% Java implementation of the PHP language and libraries. Used for years in both production and development environments with implementations in several languages including Java, C#, Ruby, PHP, and Python, Hessian has proved itself to be a versatile and powerful alternative to other web services technologies including SOAP. Caucho Technology has earned a reputation for supporting its products by a team of engineers devoted to quality customer service and a rapid bug fix and feature request program. Caucho has 8,000 customers whose mission critical applications rely on Resin application server. About Caucho Technology, Inc.
