January Updates
Welcome to the New Year!
2009 is set to be the year of cloud computing with web applications finally able to take advantage of this highly dynamic infrastructure. With a great deal of volatility in both server loads and budgetary considerations, cloud computing is poised to help enterprises weather the rapidly changing requirements of today’s business needs. Resin 4.0 will help web applications and beyond scale to the clouds.
Engineering Update
Our engineering team is busy preparing the Resin 4.0 release. Our main goal for this release is Java EE Web Profile TCK compliance, but there’s also a whole new dynamic cluster and distributed cache/deployment/session infrastructure in place. Another feature to keep an eye out for is Caucho’s Eclipse plug-in which has been a popular request over the years. It will soon be installable from directly within Eclipse.

New Features
Resin 4.0 Focus
In response to customer feedback about, we plan to consolidate minor revisions to one major revision,. As a result, expect 4.0 to be available around June 2009. Changes will include existing feature improvement plus the addition of many of new features. The three major categories to look forward to are:

  • Cloud Computing based Clustering
  • Vastly improved PHP performance
  • WebBeans and OSGi

Resin 4.0 Clustering
A major redesign for Resin 4.0 is refactoring the clustering architecture and code to support dynamic and virtual servers natively. This redesign takes into consideration ISPs’ shift towards increased flexibility to add and remove servers to handle load spikes. Resin will also offer a distributed, replicated cache infrastructure that grows and shrinks with the size of your dynamic cluster. A redesign of our clustered sessions and load balancing had to take place for this added flexibility.

Upcoming Events
Resin Administration Training
In less than 3 weeks, February 4 - 6, 2009, will be Caucho’s second training class. Our first class was such a success that we decided to hold four more classes in San Francisco, one in New York and one in London. What’s better than starting 2009 with sharpening your Resin administration skills! System administrators, engineers, developers and IT managers should attend this insightful and hands-on training to master the knowledge of managing, installing and configuring Resin. If you’re unable to attend this course, please see our listing of other 2009 dates.
