Sorry for late reply,

So what do you guys advise that I do? I cannot seem to track down this bug and it seems like some sort of memory/size/buffer etc. problem. Has anyone had trouble sending large amounts of data over Hessian? I don't think it's a hibernate problem at all as all internal sets I recreate and are not linked at all with hibernate. Also I am able to send many objects successfully but any requests with a large result set bomb out. Should I escalate this to a bug?

Thanks,
Adrian

Maybe Radu-Adrian is right about this, but <<personal opinion>>
Hibernate is one of the finest pieces of open source software these
days.

Yes, Hibernate has too much magic, but that magic *really* enhances
you application. Plus it's very natural to work with. I have used it
in several projects with no complains at all.

Now, Hibernate is very configurable and extendible so, I am sure there
HAS to be a way to correctly serialize a persistent collection into
Hessian avoiding performance impact. Check Hibernate's forums for more
information.

I've read very good comments on iBATIS, but can't confirm them.

Luck!
