I *highly* recommend CodeGuide from Omnicore (http://www.omnicore.com).
Here are a small few of the most wonderful features:
On-the-fly error checking of the whole project
Instant compilation
Full JavaServerPages support
HotSwap debugging
Support for generic types (JSR 14)

I tried JEdit for a bit, but it was very complex. I've heard good things about IDEA, but a lot of people on the CodeGuide forums that evaluated both decided on CG. Check it out. The only piece of software I've ever fallen more in love with was Beyond Compare (http://www.scootersoftware.com) ::Plug Plug::

These endorsements are legitimate. I don't work for nor know anyone that works for either of these companies. :)
