I dont recognize IDEA here......

poor docs ? have you tried http://www.intellij.org ?
hard to install ? you just have to unzip it, edit the idea.bat to point to your sdk install and it's running....
expensive ? 395$ / user is kinda low for such product.

I really found that IDEA is the most innovative IDE i have seen and i cant live without it now.
The upcomming version is really amazing.

  Subject: Favorite Java IDE?

I've been developing all my resin-related Java code in Visual Cafe for two years now and realize, for a variety of reasons, that there are better solutions. However, there are so many choices - some representing incredibly complex solutions.

Do you have any opinions with regard to your favorite Java editor - for development of servlets and stand-alone Java apps? I've briefly looked at: IntelliJ IDEA (poor docs, hard to install, expensive), Forte, Netbeans.

All appear complex compared to Visual Cafe - but that could be either that (1) they really are or (2) my [learning] skills have dulled. Probably a combination of the two.

There's a new Netbeans. Forte is now ONE Studio 4.

I just want a fast, simple editor with syntax coloring and code completion (that rules out Textpad, vi). VCS integration would be nice, but I'm willing to accept that I should move to CVS.

  Recommendations?
