Just to re-enforce what others have already mentioned, the problem you
describe is almost certainly traceable to the particular version of the
JVM you are using.

In the Windoze world, I found that the 1.4.x JVM's are far better than
the 1.3.x branch. And, based on what I've read from others, the same
appears to be true for Solaris/Linux. I highly recommend giving one of
the 1.4.x JVM's a try. Or, if you don't want to do that, at least
upgrade to the most recent build of 1.3.1, which I believe is either 04
or 05. If you go with 1.4.x, I recommend the 1.4.1FCS release, as its
memory management is definitely better than in 1.4.0_01 (there is also
a 1.4.0_02, but I have not used this).
